Autoritratto modenese

2006

© Davide Bertocchi

Made in 2006, Modenese Self-Portrait is an installation by Davide Bertocchi that debuted at the Santa Margherita palace in Modena. The work consists of five stones (taken from the Panaro River as a symbolic link to the territory) outfitted with headphones, each playing distinct songs synchronized by small speakers. This arrangement creates an audibly chaotic and cacophonous atmosphere when perceived as a whole, yet it finds definition as one approaches individual stones to listen to their associated songs.
In Bertocchi's creation, a static and inert element like stone is interlinked with the vibrant energy generated by musical compositions. The songs, chosen from the 1980s and 1990s, embody specific moods and segments of the artist's past life. This curated personal playlist becomes the tangible embodiment of music's capacity to shape our identity, serving as a musical diary of our memories. It transforms into a soundtrack where melody, sensations, lived experiences, places, and people seamlessly amalgamate into a singular mnemonic entity.
