Part of a larger project begun in 2003 and realized in collaboration with Ettore Favini, Top100 vol.8 represents the culmination of a series of music compilations. Each collection features curated selections by influential figures, including critics, curators, collectors, and artists, who left their mark on the cultural landscape during those years. As an art project, Top100 was originally conceived as a musical counterpart to rankings compiled by contemporary art magazines. It served as an invitation to scrutinize the often rigid and one-sided focus of the art system.
The song choices are twofold in their significance: they form individual soundtracks, wherein each participant freely selects a song they perceive as representative of themselves. Simultaneously, it constitutes a collective endeavor providing insights into an ideal Zeitgeist of an era. This collective effort delineates a genuine artistic and musical panorama of the years in question. Bertocchi's work underscores the role of "musical mediation" inherent in songs. As articulated by anthropologist Georgina Born, music has the capacity to perform various levels of social mediation. It aids in shaping virtual and imagined communities of individuals who, beyond the potential musical identification with songs, can share values and historical sensibilities.
